Story of a Qur’anic word: Of sins and tail!

بسم الله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبي is a popular du’aa. It means ‘O Allah! Forgive me my sins.’

ذَنْب is the Arabic word for Sin. It also “refers to both acts of indecency and self-harm”.

The deeper meaning of this word is highlighted by Br. Asim Khan in his book, ‘The Kingdom of God’, which is a Tafseer on Surah al Mulk: Continue reading

What is al Baaqiyaat-us-Salihaat ?

When someone you are deeply attached to departs, you feel sad, lonely, and dejected.

When Ramadhaan leaves us, we feel abandoned.

When you have to wind up your Umrah/Hajj journey and you know that this is your last sight of Ka’bah, your spiritual heart bleeds.

The absence of permanence in different facets of our life is the common factor for all our heartbreaks. Continue reading

What belongs to Allah?

Note to non-Muslim readers: Some mistake Allah to be “Muslim God” or God of Muslims. This is far from truth. Allah is the proper name of the One, True and the Only Lord of all mankind and all that exists in the heavens and the earth. He is my Creator and your Creator. He is unseen and has no images. Thank you.

Given the fact that everything belongs to Allah, this question might appear stupid or innocent.

Getting to understand something of everything that belongs to Allah will only lead one to appreciate the greatness of Allah. It will also increase your faith in your Creator.

So let’s explore what the Creator Himself says about what all belongs to Him, and Him alone.

Aayatul Kursi: Greatest Ayah of the Qur’an

The greatest ayah of the Qur’an is undoubtedly the Ayah No. 255 of Surah al Baqarah, popularly known as the Aayatul Kursi

‘Do you know which Ayah in Allah’s Book is greatest’, asked the Prophet sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam, and then showed his approval when he was told that this was Aayatul-Kursi, reports Ubayy Ibn Ka’b (Muslim).

About reciting the Aayatul Kursi while going to bed, the Prophet Muhammad sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam, confirmed that ‘a protector from Allah will then remain over you, and Satan will not come near you, until the morning’, reports Abu Hurayrah in a long Hadeeth about his encounter with Satan (Bukhari – Refer full Text of this Hadeeth here)

Some resources are presented here for you to download and learn further, Inshaa’Allah. Even if you know many things already, it is still advisable to go through to refresh your knowledge, nay your emaan! 🙂 Continue reading

Matters concerning Rizq and spending in the way of Allah

Alhamdulillah, this is the Eighth post in the series Yaaa Ayyuhal Lazeena Aamanu.

Today’s ayah is Ayah No. 254 which is also from Surah al Baqarah.

In this ayah, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala not only motivates His Believers to “Spend of what We have provided for you” but also warns them of dire consequences if they refuse to act.

Infaaq fee Sabeelillah, that is “spending in the way of Allah” is an important concept in Islam. It is the proof of a Muslim’s goodness.  Continue reading

A Concise and Comprehensive All-in-One Du’aa

This is an amazingly beautiful du’aa, Mashaaallah.

Abu Umamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him) made many supplications which we did not memorize. We said to him: “O Messenger of Allah! You have made many supplications of which we do not remember anything.” He said, “Shall I tell you a comprehensive prayer? Say: O Allah, I beg to You the good which Your Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) begged of You; and I seek refuge in You from the evil where from Your Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) sought refuge. You are the One from Whom help is sought and Yours is the responsibility to communicate (the truth). There is no power or strength except with Allah the Exalted, the Great.

Hadith No. 1494, At-Tirmidhi

Commentary: For those who do not remember many prayers, or cannot remember them, this is the best supplication to make. This shows part of Allah’s Mercy upon His slaves and part of the easiness of practising Islam.
