Fasting and Feminine Issues

بسم الله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

Presenting here some genuine questions and concerns from adult females regarding Menstruation and Fasting. Answers are provided by Sr. Asma bint Shameem. (I do not have the source to give credit as I received this through social media)

1. What happens if I get my period during the day while fasting?

If you get your menses ANY time during the day, your fast gets invalidated. That’s because we’re supposed to fast from DAWN to MAGHRIB for the ENTIRE day.
We cannot fast ‘PART’ of the day.
And once the menses starts, the fast is automatically invalidated.🔺Imaan an-Nawawi said:
“The ummah is unanimously agreed that it is haraam for women who are menstruating or bleeding following childbirth to fast and that their fast is not valid…” [al-Majmoo’ (2/386)]

2. But I heard that if you get your period AFTER 12 pm or midday, then your fast is valid. Is that correct?

No that’s not correct. There’s NO PROOF from the Sharee’ah to claim something like that.Even if you get your period A FEW MINUTES BEFORE MAGHRIB, the fast is invalidated.🔺Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:
“If a woman menstruates when she is fasting, her fast is invalidated even if that is a moment just before sunset, and she has to make up that day if it was an obligatory fast.”
[al-Dima’ al-Tabee’iyyah li’l-Nisa’ (p.28)]

3. What if my period finishes around fajr time?

If your period finishes at night at ANY time up until BEFORE Fajr, you have to fast that day, even if you become pure a FEW minutes before Fajr.🔺Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:
“If the menstruating woman becomes pure before dawn, even if it is one minute before, but she is CERTAIN that she is PURE, and that is during Ramadhaan, then she MUST FAST, and her fast on that day will be valid and she does not have to make it up…”
(Fataawa Ramadaan, p. 345)

4. What if my period finishes right AFTER SUNRISE. Can I fast that day?

In this situation, the fast is NOT valid because for a fast to be valid, it has to last from DAWN to SUNSET.
And once Fajr sets in, if you were not free of menses by then, then it’s too late and you cannot fast. But once you’re completely done with your period, hasten to make ghusl because even though the FAST is not valid, the PRAYERS are still obligated. So you should take a bath whenever you’re pure and then offer the prayers that are left for the remainder of the day.🔺Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:“If dawn comes when the woman is menstruating, it is not valid for her to fast that day even if she becomes pure even a moment after dawn.”

5. Can I DELAY my ghusl till after Fajr?

Yes if your menses ends before Fajr, but there’s not enough time for you to take ghusl before Fajr, you can make the intention to fast and then take the purification bath later, after Fajr adhaan. But be sure to hurry up and not delay your ghusl too long because you don’t want to miss the Fajr prayer.Similarly, you can delay your purification bath after having intimacy with your husband until after fajr if there’s no time to take the ghusl earlier. But you should have your INTENTION to fast BEFORE Fajr.🔺Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen said:
“If she becomes pure just before dawn and fasts, her fast is valid even if she does not do ghusl until after dawn. This is like the one who is junub – if he intends to fast when he is junub and does not do ghusl until after dawn breaks, his fast is valid, because of the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah radhi Allaahu anhaa who said: The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam used to wake up junub as the result of intercourse, not a wet dream, and he would fast in Ramadhaan.” (al-Bukhaari, Muslim)”

6. Do I have to wait for 7 days before making ghusl, although my period ended in 5 days?

No you’re supposed to make ghusl as soon as you’re sure that your period has ended.
It is sinful if we delay the ghusl for no reason. Some women have their period for 3, or 5 days, some 7, some 9 or 10 or even more. Each woman is different and each has to judge for herself when her period ends.
Then she should make ghusl as soon as she is pure.

7.  I took my purification bath and started fasting. Then after few days, I saw some brown discharge. Should I stop fasting?

No you shouldn’t stop fasting.
That’s because any spotting/discharge that happens AFTER the period is completely over, is to be ignored and counted as Istihaadhah or irregular bleeding.🔺Umm ‘Atiyyah radhi Allaahu anhaa said:“We did not bother about any yellow or brownish discharge after a woman’s period was over.” (Abu Dawood – saheeh by al-Albaani)

Your fast is valid in this situation. All you have to do is to make fresh wudhu for every fardh prayer. And Allaah knows best.

In the name of Allah, all praise is for Allah, and may His peace and blessings be upon His final Messenger Muhammad (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam)

Despite the fact that more than a billion Muslims will be fasting this Ramadan, how many are aware of how the Early Muslims (Salaf), those who lived Islam in the best possible way, would observe this sacred month? How they would spend their days and nights and what would change for them during the sacred month.  Continue reading

The Sunnahs of Fasting

بسم الله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

Fasting is one of the greatest acts of worship, and the reward of the one who fasts, seeking thereby the reward of Allah, is not known to anyone except Allah. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, said: ‘Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, except fasting. It is for Me and I shall reward for it.’” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (1904) and Muslim (1151)

The Ramadan fast is one of the pillars of Islam, and the Muslim must pay attention to preserving his fast, whether it is obligatory or supererogatory, so that Allah may bestow upon him this abundant reward.

There are many Sunnahs with regard to fasting, of which we will mention some:  Continue reading

The Likeness of Ramadhaan and Prophet Yusuf

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

This write-up, by the great scholar Ibn al-Jawzi, is very interesting. The author co-relates the Story of Yusuf and his 11 brothers with Ramadhaan and the other 11 months of the year.

“The month of Ramadan to the other months is like Yusuf to his brothers. So, just like Yusuf was the most beloved son to Ya’qub, Ramadan is likewise the most beloved month to Allah.  Continue reading

No Time Like Ramadan Time :)

بسم الله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

Soon, once again, the blessed month of Ramadan will be with us; once again, like “golden hours on angel wings”, will descend upon us its blessed moments.

Like every other year since Hijrah, it will summon Muslims, as individuals and as a corporate body, to an intense and sustained life of Fasting and Prayer, of worship and obedience, of devotion and discipline — all centered on the Qur’an which, too, was sent down in these very moments in the custody of “noble and trustworthy” angels.

Call will go forth to every believer to take to prolonged companionship with the Book of God. To a life of redoubled endeavor to become what God desires Muslims to be. Ramadan bids our hearts and minds, our society and polity, to come to. Joyfully and dutifully the Muslims will respond. Continue reading

A Letter to all Muslim Brothers…about Sisters!

Note 1: Sisters also to read this 🙂 InshaaAllah. Note 2: This is a re-post of a 2012 article.

Dear brothers in Islam, Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah.

This is to request all Muslim men – husbands, fathers, fathers-in-law, sons and brothers – to consider these two principal verses of the Glorious Qur’an and appreciate the graciousness of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’aala.

Salah (Prayer) and Sawm (Fasting) are two most important pillars of Islam. The interesting point to note is that Allah, while enjoining these obligatory acts of worship, uses a particular phrase that needs our attention, and because of which I said we must appreciate the graciousness of Allah, and of course the humane aspect of Islam.  Continue reading

What is al Baaqiyaat-us-Salihaat ?

When someone you are deeply attached to departs, you feel sad, lonely, and dejected.

When Ramadhaan leaves us, we feel abandoned.

When you have to wind up your Umrah/Hajj journey and you know that this is your last sight of Ka’bah, your spiritual heart bleeds.

The absence of permanence in different facets of our life is the common factor for all our heartbreaks. Continue reading
