Take Time to Appreciate Islam!

بسم الله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

While teaching a lesson on ‘Appreciating the Gifts of Allah’ to Grade 5 students, I asked them:

Tell me some gifts that Allah has given you in your life.

Many students said: Parents, water, money, friends, family, knowledge, eyes, brain etc. etc.

One boy simply said, ‘ISLAM, Sir! Islam is a Gift from Allah’.  Continue reading

Taaghuut. What is Taaghuut?

بسم الله والصلاة ةالسلام على رسول الله

Qur’anic words are more complex, richer and eloquent. They convey myriad of meanings.

Translators find it difficult to convey their precise interpretation. Taaghuut is one such word.

The best approach would be to retain such a word without translating it, and let the Qur’anic Arabic speak for itself.  Continue reading

“The lowest ebb is the turn of the tide”.

بسم الله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

When things get worse, it only means that they are gonna be better.

Islamic history is witness to the fact that whenever Muslims touched their lowest ebb, there had always been a turning of the tide.

These are the days of distress for the global Muslim Ummah. The Muslims the world over, especially those in the Americas are passing through their trying and testing times.

Hope and Faith are important at this crucial juncture. If you lose hope, you lose faith. If you lose faith, you lose everything!

Let’s recall and remember that many a time in history, Allah subhanahu wa Ta’aala brought victory to the Muslim Ummah even when the odds were seemingly against them.

In this post, let me recall some colourful snapshots from the album of Islamic history so we cheer up and fill our hearts with hope, inshaaAllah.  Continue reading

The Duaa of Arafah is the Essence of Islam

PS: This is a repost.

Hajj is Tawheed, pure and simple. Tawheed is Islam, great and splendid.

The Hadeeth often quoted on the occasion of Arafah is in fact the sum and substance of what Islam is all about.

Let us read this hadeeth first, Inshaa’Allah: Continue reading

The Timeless Message of Hajj

Hope this article serves as a timely reminder of the timelessness of Hajj, InshaaAllah.

Islamic terms are powerfully loaded with meanings and connotations. Translating them in English is like belittling their importance and import.

Hajj, when translated as ‘pilgrimage’ dilutes the very spirit of this great Islamic practice. Pilgrimage means ‘a journey of devotion’ which Hajj does include but then goes beyond it. Continue reading

At the time when we are reviving our spirits during the last days of Ramadhaan 1437, I just want to recall the hadeeth on Qiyamul Layl and share a few practical tips towards Muhasabah.

This will not take more than 5-7 minutes of your precious time, InshaaAllah.

Limited Days, Unlimited Nonsense, and a Verse of Warning!

أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَاتٍ – Ayyaamam Ma’duudaat – is the apt description for the Month of Fasting. Limited Number of Days!

So limited that you don’t know how fast its days pass until you end up saying: Allah! It is as if Ramadhaan started just now…and see these many days flew away!

Yes…1/3rd 1/2 of Ramadhaan 1437 is gone!! Subhanallaah!

Precious moments must be valued and treasured. Not wasted in unnecessary and vain pursuits!  Continue reading

Wonders of Water in the Qur’an

Allah is the Creator of water. And water is the source of life.

People use water for their survival, and forget its Creator!

As water is essential to life, so is the Creator.

The more you appreciate the blessings of water in your life, the more grateful you will be to your Creator.

Presenting, in a nutshell, some facts from the glorious Qur’an and the noble hadeeth on the occasion of World Water Day for everyone including the men in the United Nations to reflect and draw lessons, InshaaAllah.  Continue reading

Do not forget your share of the world!

This ayah from Surah al Qasas seeks to strike balance between dunya and Aakhirah.

Your involvement in worldly activities should not go to such extent that you tend to forget Aakhirah and the life to come.

Similarly your involvement in religious or spiritual activities should not make you an ascetic in that you tend to ignore the lawful enjoyment that this world has to offer. Continue reading

An Inspiring Story of All Times

PS: I wrote this post 4 years ago when this blog had not many followers/readers. Don’t know whether you have read this before. If yes, thank you so much and Jazakallah Khayr. If not, please read and share, InshaaAllah. And btw, this is one of my best write-ups, alhamdulillah,  and I am glad to say this. Baarakallaahu Feekum.

‘Then He will not neglect us’.

Can you recall which blessed Muslim woman in history said this uniquely inspiring statement? If your answer was Hajar, then you guessed it right!

Do you know the background in which this exceptionally bold lady uttered this revolutionary statement – a statement which I feel has assumed the shape of a dew drop that is permanently embedded in the cheek of time! Continue reading

Found a Bad Friend. Let him get lost!

While writing about the Numbers in the Qur’an, I noticed that I missed one type that should have actually gone into the post, ‘Categories of Friends in the Qur’an’.

This lost ‘friend’ is actually a bad companion. And without knowing about him or her in the first place, you cannot brush him/her aside by saying ‘Get Lost’!

So let us first know who this 12th category of friend is, and then let us make every possible effort to distance ourselves from him or her, InshaaAllah. Continue reading

3 Attitudes that Distinguish man from a donkey!

In different languages and educational systems, there are common approaches to drive home a point and make one understand the significance of something. One such approach is the usage of idioms and proverbs.

Allah, Who created man and gave him cognizance and the power of speech, uses superior similes and examples to put sense in his mind so that he reflects, applies his mind and develops some reasonable attitudes in life. Continue reading

What is al Baaqiyaat-us-Salihaat ?

When someone you are deeply attached to departs, you feel sad, lonely, and dejected.

When Ramadhaan leaves us, we feel abandoned.

When you have to wind up your Umrah/Hajj journey and you know that this is your last sight of Ka’bah, your spiritual heart bleeds.

The absence of permanence in different facets of our life is the common factor for all our heartbreaks. Continue reading

This 7th-Century-Book Promotes Writing!

It is indeed one of the blessings of Islam that mankind is blessed with a divine Book – preserved in pristine purity – that talks about revelation, education, divine guidance and enlightenment of the highest level.

The Qur’an that was revealed to humanity’s last and final Messenger, Prophet Muhammad, in the 7th century A.D. encourages and promotes writing as a necessary aspect of human life.

Let us have a glance at some of the Qur’anic verses which emphasize on writing as a functional principle of a civilized society. Continue reading

Qur’anic Style of Inculcating Effective Listening Skill

The general purpose of presenting human history in the Qur’an is to warn people not to repeat the mistakes of the perished nations.

Surah al Haqqaah begins with a vivid description of the destruction of the People of Saalih (Thamood), Huud (‘Aad), Musa (Phir’oun), Luut (Mu’tafikaat) and Nooh.

What comes after the historical narrative is a miracle in human language. A clarion call to heed to the message of the glorious Qur’an. A pointer towards effective listening! Continue reading

Surah al Kahf: A Weekly Reminder to Hang On with the Community

While reading Surah al Kahf – ‘Cave’ for ‘Kahf’ – last Friday I experienced a flashback.

One of the greatest statements of Umar ibn al Khattab struck my mind:

لَا إِسْلَامَ إِلَّا بِجَمَاعَةٍ ، وَلَا جَمَاعَةَ إِلَّا بِإِمَارَةٍ ، وَلَا إِمَارَةَ إِلَّا بِطَاعَةٍ

“No Islam without Community, No Community without Leadership, No leadership without Obedience.”

Those who consciously stay in this Cave do not stray. Alhamdulillaah. Yes! Our temporary visit to this Cave every Friday equips us with the staying power for the rest of our life! Continue reading

The correlation between Ihram and Kafan
