Unlocking the Locked Hearts

بسم الله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

In Surah Muhammad there is this thinking ayah:

أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ أَمْ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَا

The meaning of this ayah attracts my attention. It is normally translated as follows:

“Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?” [Surah Muhammad 47: 24

But there is more to the meaning than this translation.

The key word is أَقْفَالُهَا This word is made up of two words أقفال (locks) and ها (its)

so أَقْفَالُهَا means its locks.

If you re-read this part of the ayah giving stress on the last word with its pronoun (أَقْفَالُهَا) a larger picture emerges out: are there upon the hearts, its locks?

This means, every heart has its lock and that the locked heart has to be opened with a key.

Now, read the full ayah’s translation:

“Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there upon the hearts, its locks?”

When man doesn’t reflect or ponder over the Qur’an, it actually means that his heart is in a locked state. What unlocks the heart is reflection.

Tadabbur, contemplation/reflection/pondering, is the key to open the locked hearts.

Locks may be many, so are the keys. But the key that is programmed to open the locked hearts is only one: Tadabburul Qur’an, Pondering over the Qur’an.

So let us reflect over the message the Qur’an has to offer for the suffering humanity.

May Allah guide us to the Right Path.

Baarakallaahu Feekum.

  2. The main issue is that mostly Muslims don’t read the Holy Quran with meanings so that they can understand what exactly Quran says to us. We should learn Quran with meanings to understand it correctly.
