How to Spend the Last 10 Nights of Ramadhaan

This post is in response to some students’ request. Please read the post. Baarakallaahu Feekum.

Islam is a beautiful way of life. It has kept the open door for its believers to decide the course of action. If you ask: Is there any specific ibadah to be performed during Laylatul Qadr, the answer is: But for the du’aa (Allahumma Innaka Afu’vun Tuhibbul Afwa Fa’fu Anni) no specific ibadah is mentioned in authentic traditions.

Islam is a natural way of life. It hasn’t specifically mentioned which night is the actual night of laylatul Qadr. Being awake and searching for the Night, having hope that you spent this night in ibadah – this itself is a thrill of a kind.

That’s why the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.” Sahih al Bukhari

Another hadeeth tells us to “Search for Laylatul Qadr (Night of Decree) in the last ten nights of Ramadan.Riyaadhus Saliheen

Your effort and your du’aas matter a lot. You make du’aa and take effort to spend the night in ibadah. You spend the night in ibadah and make du’aa for getting the reward of spending the night of Laylatul Qadr – the Night that is better than a 1000 months!

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’alaa is always online. The point is: Am I willing to be online with the One Who never goes offline?!!

Variety is an essential and integral part of Islamic ibadah. Here are some suggestions on how we can live the nights of Laylatul Qadr. You can do all in each night or you can choose to spread these acts in all the five odd nights.

✅ If possible, seclude yourself in Masjid in Itikaaf for 10 days. If it is not possible, then whenever you go to the masjid make the intention of being in Itikaaf for the duration of time you’re going to stay in the masjid. Remember, Itikaaf can be for a few hours too. Girls can do itikaaf at home.

✅ Go to the masjid early for Isha followed by Taraweeh.

✅ Give Charity from your own savings and, if possible, motivate your elders to give
charity.

✅ After Taraweeh, stay in the masjid for a while and perform Voluntary Prayers or recite the glorious Qur’an.

✅ Make your Sajdahs longer and make a lot of duaas in Sajdah position. This will give you an amazing sense of satisfaction and achievement.

✅ Come back home, refresh and have some light meal. Relax.

✅ Spend some quality time with family. Joint study of the Tafseer of Surah al Qadr would be great.

✅ Make a lot of duaas. Don’t forget the specific duaa of the occasion:

اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعفُ عني

Reflect on the Du’aa of Laylatul Qadr

✅ Take some nap and ensure that you do not go into deep sleep.

✅ Remember Allah a lot through Dhikr.

✅ Continue reciting the glorious Qur’an.

✅ Reflect on the meanings of the Surahs you know by heart.

✅ Do a lot of Istighfaar (Asking forgiveness from Allah) Don’t forget the Sayyidul Istighfaar. (Link given below)

✅ Stop and Think: How far you are aware of the meanings of the wordings you say in your Salah!

✅ Do Self Evaluation: How you spent last 20 days of this month and how better you can do in the rest of the remaining days.

✅ Resolve to do something amazing till next Ramadan. Prepare a Road Map or Action Plan of achievable good deeds.

✅ Think of memorizing a Surah or at least a few verses like, for example:

 Ayatul Kursi (if u know already, learn its meaning)
 Last 2 verses of Surah al Baqarah (If you know already, learn its meanings and go through its Tafseer)
 Last 3 verses of Surah al Hashr
 Last 2 verses of Surah Tawbah
 Verses 26 and 27 of Surah Aal Imran
 Surah al Mulk
Sayyidul Istighfaar

✅ Have a break for Tea or Coffee.

✅ See from the window or go out in open and look at the sky and spend some solitary moments to reflect on the beautiful night sky and marvel at the wondrous creation of Al Khaliq.

✅ While having food and drink, recall the relevant Qur’anic verses. This will create in you a sense of belonging and instill a sense of gratitude to Almighty Allah. Check out the verses 24 to 32 of Surah Abasa and verses 68 to 70 of Surah al Waaqi’ah.

✅ Recall those specific gifts Allah has blessed you with and think of ways on how best you can give thanks unto Him.

✅ Go to Masjid for Qiyamul Layl (Some mosques do have this facility – of late night congregational salah. Check out the timings when you go for Ishaa prayer) If not, pray at home.

✅ If you can afford, buy some water bottles and keep in the masjid so people can drink and in the process you reap the reward for providing water to the thirsty.

✅ Have light suhoor and go to masjid for Fajr prayer. Go at least 10 to 15 minutes before the Azaan of Fajr so you can pray a few rakaats of Tahajjud prayer. Who knows which prayer Allah accepts and grants you forgiveness.

These are suggestions, after all. You decide which and what all you can do, then do your best in the best manner possible inShaaAllah.

May Allah give us the Tawfeeque and Hidayah to spend the Nights of Laylatul Qadr with the sole intention of pleasing Him alone, hoping for His reward and forgiveness.
