The Muslim and the Hijrah of All Times

بسم الله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

Whenever Allah gives us an opportunity to witness the New Year, we must always try to go back to our roots and understand what it is means to be a Muslim, and what is the relevance of hijrah in our life.

So the simple question is: Who is a Muslim?

And What is the hijrah for the modern day Muslim?

Suffice is to quote a relevant hadeeth here: Continue reading

Saturday is Aashoora Day

Please be reminded that today (Thursday) is 8th of Muharram and Aashoora falls on Saturday (24th October 2015) in UAE, Saudi Arabia and in many other parts of the world.

As per authentic Islamic traditions we are encouraged to fast either on the 9th and 10th of Muharram OR on the 10th and 11th.

This clarification is given here as there is confusion created by the already published calendars by some Muslim governments which erroneously say that today is 9th of Muharram which is NOT the case. Continue reading

Know Your Hijrah. Do Your Hijrah!

Two hadeeths, in relation to Hijrah, stand out distinctly.

These two great sayings of the glorious Messenger of Allah – Prophet Muhammad, sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam – in fact set the Agenda for the New Year.

They set the agenda for every New Year. Every New Month. Every New Week. Every New Day. Every New Moment!

If you care about your Islam, you will value them in your life.

So happy New Year to you, and to every moment of your life. Continue reading

Forgiveness and The Fast of ‘Aashura

In UAE, Saudi Arabia and some adjoining countries, Tomorrow (3rd Nov 2014) is the 10th of Muharram, popularly known as ”Aashura”. Please check out the date as to when ‘Aashura falls in your locality, and do the needful accordingly, Inshaa’Allah.

This is in response to the question, “I heard that fasting the day of ‘Aashoora’ expiates for the past year, is this true?  Does it expiate for everything, even major sins? What is the reason for venerating this day?” taken from IslamQA. It is given here owing to its importance and relevance. Baarakallahu feekum.

Fast of Aashura, and when?

The 10th of Muharram is popularly known as Aashura.

Fasting on this day is highly encouraged.

There seems to surround some confusion with regard to the dates.

As per the Saudi announcement, Aashura falls on Thursday, the 14th November. As per the dates given in UAE Awqaf Ministry’s website, 10th Muharam falls on Wednesday, 13th Nov.

While it is true that we must always go by the local announcement about the sighting of the moon and the commencement of the month, in this case I feel it is better to fast on both days, i.e. 13th and 14th November, Inshaa’Allah.

Some of the merits of the fast of Aashura are mentioned below:  Continue reading

When to Fast the Day of Ashura

As we know, Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram; the first month of the Islamic lunar year. The start of lunar months, besides Ramadan and Dhu’l-Hijjah for those performing hajj, is decided based on one of two criteria: a) sighting the new moon and b) the completion of the previous month. This view is found to be agreed on by all scholars based on the prophetic tradition, ‘Fast when you see it (the moon) and cease fasting when you see it, and if it is hidden or cloudy, complete the counting of Sha’ban as thirty days.’(Al-Bukhari and Muslim, narrated by Abu Hurairah) Continue reading

Muharram: Do’s and Don’ts

Dear sisters and brothers, Assalamu Alaikum. Bismillah..

Owing to its relevance and importance, the following is presented here:

 * Muharram is one of the four sacred Months out of twelve. The other three months being Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Rajab. These four months have been sacred since the creation of universe – as told by Allah in the Qur’an in Surah Taubah.
* Muharram is a sacred month NOT because the grandson of Prophet Muhammad صلّى الله عليه وسلّم  was martyred in this month. It is sacred because Allah made it sacred along with three other months and told us about it in the Quran.

Muharram: Facts and Fiction

Muharram is the month with which the Muslims begin their lunar (Hijri) Calendar.

It is one of the four sanctified months about which the Holy Quran Says (what means): {Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred…}  [Quran 9: 36] Continue reading
