How Ramadhaan fasts + 6 Shawwal fasts make fasting every day?

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar.

Fasting six days of the month of Shawwal is mentioned in authentic ahadeeth.

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Whosoever fasted in Ramadhaan and then followed up with six fasting days of Shawwal, it is like fasting every day.” (Muslim) Continue reading

Hijrah: The least discussed topic in Rabi al Awwal!

Note: I want more and more readers to read this post, hence I am re-posting this. Please click the link above to go ahead with reading. Thank you and Jazakallaahu Khayra.

Dear brothers and sisters, Assalamu Alaikum.

Most of you would have experienced that every year when the month of Rabi al Awwal arises in our life, e-mails start pouring in with arguments and counter-arguments on Prophet’s birthday. Islamic blogs and websites come up with hundreds of articles and posts on the topic Mawlid/Meelad-un-Nabi.

I feel that the most important historical incident that took place in the life history of our glorious Messenger – Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is seldom discussed in this month!

Fast of Aashura, and when?

The 10th of Muharram is popularly known as Aashura.

Fasting on this day is highly encouraged.

There seems to surround some confusion with regard to the dates.

As per the Saudi announcement, Aashura falls on Thursday, the 14th November. As per the dates given in UAE Awqaf Ministry’s website, 10th Muharam falls on Wednesday, 13th Nov.

While it is true that we must always go by the local announcement about the sighting of the moon and the commencement of the month, in this case I feel it is better to fast on both days, i.e. 13th and 14th November, Inshaa’Allah.

Some of the merits of the fast of Aashura are mentioned below:  Continue reading

I am a Muslim, alhamdulillah! Is my pocket also a Muslim?

Zakah and Ramadhaan are seen as twins. In Ramadhaan, we not only fast but we also give Zakah, alhamdulillah. Even though it is a not a rule that the Zakah be given only in this month, we give Zakah in Ramadhaan because of amassing greater rewards in this blessed month. We have to give Zakah anyway, so why not give in a Month which is Full of Blessings Unlimited?

Interesting point to note is that both Zakah and Sawm (Fasting) were made obligatory in the same year, the Second Year of Hijrah.

Muharram: Do’s and Don’ts

Dear sisters and brothers, Assalamu Alaikum. Bismillah..

Owing to its relevance and importance, the following is presented here:

 * Muharram is one of the four sacred Months out of twelve. The other three months being Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Rajab. These four months have been sacred since the creation of universe – as told by Allah in the Qur’an in Surah Taubah.
* Muharram is a sacred month NOT because the grandson of Prophet Muhammad صلّى الله عليه وسلّم  was martyred in this month. It is sacred because Allah made it sacred along with three other months and told us about it in the Quran.

Facts about Aashurah – The 10th of Muharram: Continue reading

The Message of Ramadhaan

We observe Ramadan every year. Do we also listen to it?

Ramadan is the most important month of our calendar. It is a tremendous gift from Allah in so many ways. In our current state of being down and out, it can uplift us, empower us, and turn around our situation individually and collectively. It is the spring season for thegardenofIslamwhen dry grass can come back to life and flowers bloom. But these benefits are not promised for lifeless and thoughtless rituals alone. They will be ours if our actions are informed by the message of Ramadan. Continue reading

Don’t Miss Ramadhaan’s First Night

🙂 Wishing all my readers RAMADHAAN MUBAARAK 🙂

With the approach of Ramadan every year, I always recall the following Prophetic hadith:

“My people (Ummah) are granted five gifts that no prophet before me had been given. First, when it is the first night of Ramadan, Allah looks at His servants. He will never punish those at whom He looks. Second, the smell of their mouths when night approaches is more pleasant [to Allah] than the scent of musk. Third, angels seek Allah’s forgiveness for them everyday and night. Fourth, Allah commands Paradise saying, ‘Be prepared and adorned for My servants; they are about to be relieved from the pains of the worldly life and move to My Home and Honor.’ Fifth, when it is the last night (of Ramadan) Allah forgives the sins of all people.” Thereupon, a man asked, “Is it the night of Qadr (Power)?” He (the Prophet) said, “No, don’t you see that once workers finish their tasks, they take their wages?” (Ahmad and Al-Bazzar) Continue reading

Ramadhaan: A School for Training the Soul

Ramadhaan is the month of piety and fasting. It helps one control oneself and make a commitment to piety. The verses about fasting in the Chapter Al-Baqarah commences like this: {O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous} [Quran 2:183]. This is why fasting in Ramadhaan disciplines and trains Muslims. Continue reading
