The Heart: Fu’aad, Qalb and Sadr

بسم الله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

In the Qur’an, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’aala uses three words to describe our hearts:

QALB, FU’AAD and SADR. We know that every Arabic word is chosen for a reason, yet all three of these words for the most part are translated as “heart.” As usual, the intricate meanings of these words are not captured in the translation.

So, what is their difference?  Continue reading

Taaghuut. What is Taaghuut?

بسم الله والصلاة ةالسلام على رسول الله

Qur’anic words are more complex, richer and eloquent. They convey myriad of meanings.

Translators find it difficult to convey their precise interpretation. Taaghuut is one such word.

The best approach would be to retain such a word without translating it, and let the Qur’anic Arabic speak for itself.  Continue reading

Ihsaan: Beyond Excellence

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam, Assalamu Alaikum.

The word I am going to discuss today is ‘Ihsaan’ احسان Actually this is Part 1 of a series I intend to write, Inshaa’Allah.

The word “excellence” comes from “excel” which means “to be exceptionally good at something”.   Excellence also means “the quality of being extremely good or outstanding”.  It is “the state of excelling; surpassing merit or quality” and “the activity etc. in which a person excels” (Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary and the New Oxford Dictionary of Modern English). ظلم – The greatest wrong!

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

Insha’Allah I plan to discuss on some selected words from the Glorious Qur’an, on a fortnightly basis. Today’s word is  ظلم

وَإِذْ قَالَ لُقْمَانُ لابْنِهِ وَهُوَ يَعِظُهُ يَا بُنَيَّ لا تُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ

“And (remember) when Luqmân said to his son when He was advising him: “O My son! join not in Worship others with Allâh. Verily! joining others in Worship with Allâh is a great Zûlm (wrong) indeed.” (Surah Luqman: 31: 13)

We need to understand: Shirk and Zulm. Continue reading
