Wonders of Water in the Qur’an
Allah is the Creator of water. And water is the source of life.
People use water for their survival, and forget its Creator!
As water is essential to life, so is the Creator.
The more you appreciate the blessings of water in your life, the more grateful you will be to your Creator.
Presenting, in a nutshell, some facts from the glorious Qur’an and the noble hadeeth on the occasion of World Water Day for everyone including the men in the United Nations to reflect and draw lessons, InshaaAllah.
1. Water is a blessing of Allah:
“And We have sent down blessed rain from the sky and made grow thereby gardens and grain from the harvest” Surah Qaaf 50:9 Also, see this hadeeth
2. Allah created every living thing from water:
“Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?” (Surah Al Anbiya 21: 30)
Two examples to quote:
a. Allah created every moving creature from water:
“Allah has created every [living] creature from water. And of them are those that move on their bellies, and of them are those that walk on two legs, and of them are those that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.” Surah An-Noor 24: 45
b. Allah created man from water:
“So let man observe from what he was created. He was created from a fluid, ejected, Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.” Surah At-Taariq 86:5-7
“Did We not create you from a liquid disdained? And We placed it in a firm lodging. For a known extent.” Surah al Mursalaat 77: 20-22
“And it is He who has created from water a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent [concerning creation].” Surah Al Furqan 25: 54
3. Water gives life to the dead earth:
“And Allah has sent down rain from the sky and given life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who listen.” Surah An-Nahl 16:65
4. Waterfalls and springs from rocks and stones:
“Then your hearts became hardened after that, being like stones or even harder. For indeed, there are stones from which rivers burst forth, and there are some of them that split open and water comes out, and there are some of them that fall down for fear of Allah. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.” Surah al Baqarah 2:74
5. Water is a Precious Gift of Allah, and the Most Essential Bounty to Humanity:
Water is the most essential bounty of God to humanity. Water forms the basis of all bodily fluids and it makes up two thirds of body weight, regulates the body temperature and it is essential for maintaining health, personal cleanliness and general hygiene. Water is also indispensable to agriculture and industry.
“It is He who sends down rain from the sky; from it is drink and from it is foliage in which you pasture [animals]”. Surah An-Nahl 16:10
“And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And from the palm trees – of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.” Surah An’aam 6:99
6. One Water, different and distinct yields……Subhanallah!
“And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees, [growing] several from a root or otherwise, watered with one water; but We make some of them exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason.” Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:4
7. Water makes the earth green:
“Do you not see that Allah has sent down rain from the sky and the earth becomes green? Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.” Surah al Hajj 22: 63
8. Animals and human beings though different, yet share the same water:
“Have they not seen that We drive the water [in clouds] to barren land and bring forth thereby crops from which their livestock eat and [they] themselves? Then do they not see?” Surah As-Sajdah 32:27
9. Water Resources and Stores:
It is one of the most important blessing of Allah that He has provided water through rain clouds, sea, river, springs, lakes, ponds, wells, frozen water, glaciers and fresh water wetlands.
He has also established water storages for the benefit of His creation which is sufficient and essential for sustainable development.
And have you seen the water that you drink? Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? Surah al Waaqi’ah 56:68-70
“And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.” Surah al Qamar 54:12
10. Two Bodies of Water, flowing together yet distinct!
Allah perfect’s planning and execution can be noticed from the wonders of marine life. There are two bodies of water, one is palatable and the other bitter. Both flow together but subhanallah there are distinct and not mixed up!
“And not alike are the two bodies of water. One is fresh and sweet, palatable for drinking, and one is salty and bitter. And from each you eat tender meat and extract ornaments which you wear, and you see the ships plowing through [them] that you might seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful.” Surah Faatir 35:12
“He released the two seas, meeting [side by side]; (19) Between them is a barrier [so] neither of them transgresses. (20) So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?” Surah Ar-Rahmaan 55:19-21
11. None except Allah alone can give you water:
Say, “Have you considered: if your water was to become sunken [into the earth], then who could bring you flowing water?” Surah al Mulk 67:30
“And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away.” Surah al Muminoon 23:18
12. Have you ever marveled at the food you eat?
“Then let mankind look at his food – (24) How We poured down water in torrents, (25) Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], (26) And caused to grow within it grain (27) And grapes and herbage (28) And olive and palm trees (29) And gardens of dense shrubbery (30) And fruit and grass – (31) [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.” Surah Abasa 24-32
“Have you seen the water that you drink?” Surah al Waaqi’ah 56:68
13. Amazing description of Water cycle in the Qur’an:
“It is Allah who sends the winds, and they stir the clouds and spread them in the sky however He wills, and He makes them fragments so you see the rain emerge from within them. And when He causes it to fall upon whom He wills of His servants, immediately they rejoice” Surah Ar-Room 30:48
“And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy until, when they have carried heavy rainclouds, We drive them to a dead land and We send down rain therein and bring forth thereby [some] of all the fruits. Thus will We bring forth the dead; perhaps you may be reminded.” Surah al A’raaf 7:57
“Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky and makes it flow as springs [and rivers] in the earth; then He produces thereby crops of varying colors; then they dry and you see them turned yellow; then He makes them [scattered] debris. Indeed in that is a reminder for those of understanding.” Surah Az-Zumar 39:21
“And We placed therein gardens of palm trees and grapevines and caused to burst forth therefrom some springs” Surah YaSeen 36:34
14. Do not contaminate, misuse or cause corruption in water:
“And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation..” Surah al A’raaf 7:56
“Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].” Surah Ar-Room 30:41
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) cautioned us not to pass urine in stagnant water. We know what harm it brings to the environment when such pollution occurs.
15. Save Water, Do Not Waste It:
“And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.” Surah al Isra 17:26, 27
Ablution is a sublime spiritual experience for a Muslim. But look how the caring Prophet (peace be upon him) cautioned his followers against extravagance even in matters of ablution.
The Messenger of Allah passed by Sa’d when he was performing ablution, and he said: ‘What is this extravagance?’ He replied: ‘Can there be any extravagance in ablution?’ He said: ‘Yes, even if you are on the bank of a flowing river.'” Arabic Text here
Man must bear in mind that he will be questioned on the Day of Judgement about the joys and comforts of this world. May Allah have mercy on us.
16. Thank Allah for water:
“O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.” Surah al Baqarah 2:172
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Allah will be pleased with His slave who praises Him (i.e., says Al-hamdu lillaah) when he eats and praises Him when he drinks”. Arabic text here
17. Seek water from the Giver:
As we learned in point # 11 above, Allah is the Sole Provider of Water.
It, therefore, becomes our responsibility to ask Allah for water whether there is drought or no drought. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us this beautiful du’aa:
“O Allah, give water to Your slaves and Your animals, and spread Your mercy, and give life to Your dead land.” Arabic text here
May Allah make us a part of the green community that cares for the environment.
Sal-lal-laahu Ala Muhammad, Sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-Sallam.
