Categories of Friends in the Qur’an

PS: Please Read this ADDITION

There are Eleven Twelve Categories of Friends mentioned in the Qur’an.

Let’s know them first before making friendship with them, InshaaAllah.

1.  ولي Wali ✓

A protective friend. The one who cares about you.

According to this ayah, your Wali is Allah, His Messenger, and those who believe, establish regular prayer, give Zakah and are humble.

2. رفيق Rafeeq ✓

A companion, a friend you can count on and turn to in times of need.

A Muslim’s rafeeq are the prophets (nabiyyeen), the steadfast affirmers of truth (siddiqeen), the martyrs (the shuhadaa) and the righteous (saliheen)

The last words of the Prophet (peace be upon him) were اللَّهُمَّ الرَّفِيقَ الأَعْلَى “O Allah, the highest companion”. Sahih al Bukhari

3. خليل Khaleel ✓

A very close and intimate friend, who you feel attached to. When he is there, you feel happy. When he is not around, you miss them a lot and are always thinking about him.

title of Prophet Ibraheem alaihis salam.

4. صديق Sadeeq ✓

A true friend, the one who is devoted to you and is sincere in friendship.

5. وليجة Waleejah ✓

Waleejah is a collective noun.

He/They are your close friend/s and associate/s.

Your waleejah can be Allah, His Messenger and the believing Muslims and Muslimahs.

6. حميم Hameem

An intimate friend, a close relative. He is a friend in deed.

All friendship ends in this world. In the Hereafter, no hameem will ask anything of a friend!

7. قرين Qareen  ✗

A close companion for wrong reasons. He is always with you and pushes you to do evil and disobey Allah.

As a warning, Allah says in the Qur’an that he who turns away from the remembrance (dhikr) of Allah, to him He appoints a Qareen, and this devil becomes his friend

The quranaa (pl. of Qareen) are those companions who present evil as an attractive package!

You must beware of him/them. He is Shaytaan.

8. خذول Khazool ✗

Someone you consider to be your friend but in reality he is your enemy who will ditch you one day for sure.

One given to letting others down. One characterised by forsaking friends!

He befriends you after successfully misleading you and deserts you when you need him.

The ultimate khazool is the satan.

9. أخدان Akhdaan ✗

Friends of the opposite sex that you are attracted to. They are the Secret lovers!

Allah commands us not to take someone as your secret lover!

Mere attraction is deception, get married instead.

10. بِطَانَةً Bitaanah

The kind of friend whom you can trust with the deepest secrets in your life.

Only believers can be taken as a friend of this kind with whom you share all secrets.

Allah says in this ayah: “O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves, for they will not spare you [any] ruin”.

11. صاحب Saahib

He could be your long-term or short-term friend/companion. He/she can be your husband/wife (saahibah), a fellow traveller, a neighbour or a life long friend.

A sahib is the one who shows his concern towards you and cares about your well being.

Allah calls Prophet Muhammad a Saahib to the Makkans, and Abu Bakr Siddique a saahib to the Prophet himself.

12. Asheer ‘ASHEER عشير

To conclude this post, let me quote two hadeeths and one proverb.

Prophet Muhammad sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam said:

“Man is on his friend’s life-style. So everyone of you must be careful whom you befriend!”  Tirmidhi

This is a warning from the Messenger of Allah for Muslims to adopt discretion in the choice of friendship.

In another hadeeth, a beautiful example is given to make us understand as to who could benefit us, and who could harm us.

“The example of a good companion in comparison with a bad one, is like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith’s bellows; from the first you would either buy musk or at least enjoy its good smell while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof.” Sahih al Bukhari

“Tell me who your friend is, and I will tell who you are” is a popular proverb. And it is very true!

May Allah guide us on the Right Path.

Sal-lal-laahu Ala Muhammad, Sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-Sallam.
