Bestowing and withholding: The prerogative of Allah alone!
Among the prescribed Azkaar which we say everyday at the end of each obligatory Salah, this is a beautiful supplication (du’aa). It is concise and comprehensive.
Belief in Tawheed is eloquently expressed in a finest manner through this du’aa, which includes the Tahleel and Tahmeed. This du’aa also signifies a Believer’s Tawakkul in His Lord, Most Gracious.
Let us first read the hadeeth which describes this du’aa and then with the help of Qur’aanic verses try to understand some elements which will enhance our belief in Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala, Inshaa’Allah.
Al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam) used to say at the conclusion of prayer:
“La ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa sharika lahu, lahul-mulku, wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa ‘ala kulli shai’in Qadeerr. Allaahumma laa mani’a lima a’tayta, wa laa mu’tiya lima mana’ta, wa laa yanfa’u dhal-jaddi, minkal-jaddu (there is no true god except Allaah. He is One and He has no partner with Him, His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent. O Allaah! None can deny that which You bestow and none can bestow that which You hold back; and the greatness of the great will be of no avail to them against You).” Bukhari and Muslim
This one submission, “O Allaah! None can deny that which You bestow and none can bestow that which You hold back”, brings out the great Attributes of Allah:
Allah alone is the Bestower of Mercy and Grace. Allah alone is the Remover of distress. He alone is Dispeller of Adversity. He alone is the Giver of Happiness and Prosperity. He alone is the Curer of all ills.
Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon our gracious and glorious Messenger, Prophet Muhammad, sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam, who gave his followers an amazing gift: That which brings out the sum and substance of all the following Qur’anic verses put together in just one du’aa. Subhanallaah!
“Or, Who listens to the (soul) distressed when it calls on Him, and Who relieves its suffering, and makes you (mankind) inheritors of the earth? (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Little it is that you heed!” (Surah An-Naml 27: 62)
“And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him. And if He touches you with good – then He is over all things competent”. (Surah al-An’aam 6: 17)
“Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy – none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds – none can release it thereafter. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise”. (Surah al Faatir 35: 2)
“And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him; and if He intends for you good, then there is no repeller of His bounty. He causes it to reach whom He wills of His servants. And He is the Forgiving, the Merciful”. (Surah Yuunus 10: 107)
“And if you asked them, “Who created the heavens and the earth?” they would surely say, “Allah.” Say, “Then have you considered what you invoke besides Allah? If Allah intended me harm, are they removers of His harm; or if He intended me mercy, are they withholders of His mercy?” Say, “Sufficient for me is Allah; upon Him [alone] rely the [wise] reliers.” (Surah AzZumar 39: 38)
“And [mention] Ayyoob, when he called to his Lord, “Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful.” (Surah al Ambiyaa 21: 83)
Affliction, Harm, Distress, Adversity, Trouble, Hardship cannot be removed by anyone other than Allah.
Mercy and Blessings comes from Allah alone.
In Him we all must have Trust. For, unto Him we all must return.
