Fruit journey!

Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem

Reading, understanding and pondering over the relevant verses of the Qur’an takes one on a picturesque observational journey of the lush green nature.

Gardens, plants, vegetation, trees, soil, sky, water, air, sunshine, clouds, flower, leaves, branches, roots, fruits, seedlings, grains, crops – you mention anything about nature and environment, and you will find it in the Qur’an!

And the greatest of all mentions is the connection between the creation and the Creator. How ironic and sad indeed it is that many people in the world enjoy observing nature but forgot the Creator behind all enjoyments!

However, here, I would like to restrict myself on the Qur’anic importance of eating fruits, especially seasonal fruits.

Two verses in Surah al An’aam highlight the significance of observing and eating ripe fruits:

“And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And from the palm trees – of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe”. (6: 99)

“And He it is who causes gardens to grow, [both] trellised and untrellised, and palm trees and crops of different [kinds of] food and olives and pomegranates, similar and dissimilar. Eat of its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakah] on the day of its harvest. And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess. (6: 141)

So we need to eat more fruits, enjoy the blessings showered upon us by Allah and most importantly be thankful to Him. We shall return unto Him one day, and He will question us about all our joys and comforts.

“Then, on that Day, you will be called to account for all the bounties you enjoyed”. (102: 8)
